I Remember It Well...

SOUTH PHILADELPHIA MEMORY CARDS

Preserving Our Past. Inspiring Our Future.

History comes alive when we connect it to the people, places, experiences, and memories that have shaped our communities.

I Remember It Well… South Philadelphia Memory Cards is an educational resource designed to introduce students and community members to the rich history of South Philadelphia.

Through questions and answers about local people, landmarks, civil rights, music, education, neighborhood traditions, and everyday life, these cards encourage curiosity, conversation, research, and discovery.

More than a collection of historical facts, they invite us to explore our own family and community stories—and recognize that everyone’s story is history.

MORE THAN MEMORY CARDS

Opening Doors to Learning, Discovery, and Community Engagement

Each card presents a question and answer about South Philadelphia’s history, people, places, and cultural heritage. But the learning does not have to end with the answer.

Every card can become the starting point for further questions, classroom discussions, independent research, and creative projects.

No Prior Knowledge Required!

You do not have to live in Philadelphia, have grown up there, or already know its history to enjoy and use these cards. They are designed for curious learners, whether encountering these stories for the first time or rediscovering a familiar past.

Teachers and facilitators can introduce Philadelphia’s history while encouraging participants to investigate the history of their own neighborhoods.

You don’t have to know the history to begin with. You only have to be willing to explore it!

Organizations can support this project by purchasing packs of I Remember It Well…South Philadelphia Memory Cards and designating a school, library, youth program, senior group, church, or community organization to receive them.

Two Educational Approaches

1. Discovering Our History

Students explore the stories behind the cards, investigate historical events, develop research questions, and share their discoveries. Activities can be adapted for middle school, high school, and college students.

2. Preserving Our Time: A Community Time Capsule Project

Older students use the cards as models to create their own cards, interview relatives and community members, record oral histories, collect photographs, write essays, and document everyday life.

The project may culminate in a documented time capsule intended for reopening 25–30 years or more in the future.

The cards can also support learning across subjects—including geography, English language arts, mathematics, music, science, technology, civics, and family and consumer sciences—and can be used in libraries, senior centers, churches, youth programs, museums, family gatherings, and intergenerational activities.

The cards provide the questions. Curiosity opens the door. Imagination and discovery determine how far the learning will go.
